The Black Howler Monkey is the largest monkey in the Central American region. Known locally as baboons, Black Howlers have an infamous howl, a deep resonating and raspy cat-like roar that can be heard miles away. The baboon sanctuary is a natural reserve for Howler Monkeys and is also home to 200 bird species, with iguanas, peccaries and coatis among other animals. Special trails are cut through the forest so that visitors can see the monkey up close and personal. Local farmers and riverside villagers have created an 18 square mile reserve to protect the 1,500 Black Howler monkeys that inhabit the area.
