Xunantunich is located 74 Miles west of Belize City, (1 Mile) near the Guatemalan border. It is between San Ignacio and Benque Viejo Town, while San Jose Succtoz is the nearest village at the other side of the river.  It is a 2hr drive from Belize city. Upon arriving the banks of the Macal River there is a hand -cranked car-ferry that takes passengers & automobiles across the scenic river to the ancient Maya site where you can see the spectacular ruins of ancient times.

The largest pyramid is el Castillo and rises a magnificent 130 ft. above the main plaza & more than 200ft above the river valley below. This main temple is visible from the highway when approaching the village of San Jose Succotz, so look out for it!
